The 5antuario effect - The massive need for real information in Mexico

Last Sunday (July 15th) we published a post about popular Mexican blog el5antuario.org making an open call to the Mexican Armed Forces to join the public protests against fraud in the ongoing Mexican presidential elections. During his daily video posts, el 5anto (also known as Ruy 5algado) mentioned our blog and asked his readership to drop by and check us out.

The picture above shows the 'small' difference that his endorsement did in our stats. From 18 visits on Sunday when we published our post to 3,684 visits on Monday evening when this sea-coloured demon went to sleep. The day would close with a total of 3,095 individual visits to this blog, most of which came from a link published at el5antuario.org, and the rest from their twitter and facebook contacts.

Far from exercising bragging rights about our activity on this blog, this significant increase in our traffic is a testimony of the massive following that el5antuario has as a true independent and emergent medium. In a country where the two major national media networks are completely biased in favour of the highest bidder, it is the work carried out by people like el 5anto that allows us to inform and be informed.

el5antuario.org calls Mexican armed forces to march against Election Fraud (Or is it the other way around?)

"Good morning, good afternoon, good evening" is the traditional greeting Ruy Salgado uses to open all of his videos in the Mexican political blog el5antuario.org.
Also known as el 5anto, Salgado called the Mexican armed forces to join the massive protests against the Election Fraud in México.

The most popular non-comercial Mexican blog, el5antuario.org, announced on July 10th a call to the Mexican armed forces to join the national popular protests against the Mexican Election Fraud.

This call came as a response to several emails that el5antuario.org has received from several anonymous members of the Mexican armed forces who have expressed interest in supporting the current public protests against the so called victory of Enrique Peña Nieto in the Mexican elections.

In his daily videocast on July 10th, Salgado described the facts explained to him by his sources. He explained that armed forces are not allowed to take part in public protests in full uniform. His main source (a lieutenant of the armed forces) called for a march of active members of the armed forces, supported by the various social and student movements against the election fraud, towards the Secretary of National Defence premises asking for his support to the impeachment of the Election process. Salgado added that whilst it would not be possible to have the military march in their full uniform, it would be nice if they could be clearly identified. He suggested they marched in white t-shirts, blue jeans and black boots as a way to identify themselves without recurring to their full military outfits

Covarrubias admits that she was asked to modify election polls results

Ana Cristina Covarrubias (director of Covarrubias y Asociados, a poll agency) admitted that she was requested to alter poll results against the left wing candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

During an interview for ADN Político, Covarrubias mentioned that apart from methodology mistakes, it was possible that poll companies had ethics issues.

ADN Político, asked Covarrubias if she thinks that polling companies deliberately present false results to aid or attack the public image of the candidates. Covarrubias answered:

I would believe it...  that this exists; even I have received offers.

However, Covarrubias refused to disclose who has made such offers to her arguing that she does not like gossips and is "bored with scandals".
